Here we go then, we can start the oddly satisfying ritual of watching a little dot making its way across America whilst pretending to be working…. As I am typing this Brian has covered 30.7 miles in the first 2 hours…. just another 4270 miles to go then!
There’s a reason why everything is so green in this part of the world by the way…. 191 days of rain; which obviously turned up to see the riders off….
The first 100 miles or so is a series of endless rollers as the riders head towards Coburg.
Over night in discussions with the back up team its been decided to tackle the 5000ft high Hunter’s Pass in daylight as until yesterday it was blocked with snow and now has “one lane open for bikes”… quite what that means nobody is sure but Brian is prepared to walk it rather than risk a fall if the going gets dodgy.
There’s been lots of brave talk about sub 20 days from the younger riders but Brian has a plan and he’s sticking to power & HR through the rolling hills rather than get caught up racing too hard too soon…
